North-West University has told students and staff that GoNow e-scooters are not approved for use on its Potchefstroom campus or any other NWU premises.

The university said the restriction covers testing, trial rides and the creation of scooter parking bays. The notice followed the launch of a rental service that has become popular with students and other commuters around the Bult.

NWU said GoNow has approached the university. Any future consideration would require a detailed operational plan and a process that complies with the university's financial and procurement rules.

The university acknowledged the possible environmental and mobility benefits of e-scooters, but said safety, liability, governance and operational risks must be addressed before any campus use could be considered. Mooirivier Beskerming is monitoring the scooters in their current operating area.
